Sourcewater, a leading provider of oilfield water information, announced this week the purchase of Digital H2O from Genscape Inc to expand its service offering of oilfield water intelligence. The deal will allow Sourcewater to include robust disposal well data and analytics to their database, which presently focuses on freshwater sourcing and logistics.
Digital H2O scoured public documents on water produced and disposed of to provide a map of the movement of oilfield water around high activity areas. The platform monitored the activity in the Permian Basin closely and predicted a number of the disposal capacity issues that have been a boon to the water midstream industry in the region.
At the recent PWS Seminar in Midland, Sourcewater presented on its use of satellite imagery to monitor frac pits and pad construction sites in west Texas. With the use of this technology, Sourcewater is able to find new construction and monitor the conveyance of water to nearby pits, ultimately allowing for the prediction of a frac with fairly high accuracy.
In addition to the data from Digital H2O, Sourcewater CEO Josh Adler told Water in Oil that they are also adding IoT and SCADA feeds for pit and tank levels, pipeline flows and truck locations. The regional coverage focuses on New Mexico, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, and Texas, with especially high granularity in the Permian Basin, but Adler intends to expand the coverage to include Oklahoma and Wyoming in the future, where he seems interesting activity.
It is unclear if the sale of Digital H2O signifies Genscape’s departure from the produced water space entirely. Adler said that he will be maintaining the Digital H2O platform for the time being to avoid disruptions to the service but will be integrating the datafeed into the Sourcewater platform over time to improve the robustness of Sourcewater's offering. Sourcewater will be honoring Digital H2O’s customer contracts through the end of the year.
