MGX Minerals and Eureka Resources have signed a letter of intent to create a joint venture aimed at recovering lithium from produced water in the Marcellus and Uttica shales. Eureka treats 10,000 barrels of produced water per day to extract minerals, including sodium chloride and calcium chloride for resale. This joint venture would add lithium to the list.
MGX Minerals has developed what they refer to as a rapid lithium extraction technology, eliminating the need for large-footprint equipment and evaporation ponds. Just last month, MGX along with engineering partner PurLucid Treatment Systems announced the deployment of a second water treatment unit to a producer in the Canadian oil sands capable of treating up to 62 barrels of produced water an hour. Lithium extraction in this case occurs once oil and bitumen are removed.
Eureka Resources treats and recycles produced water from production operations in the Marcellus and Uttica shales. They provide turnkey solutions and operate 3 central treatment facilities in Pennsylvania, each capable of processing 10,000 barrels of water per day. Their facilities employ, among other technologies, crystallizers and mechanical vapor recompression distillation.
MGX President Jared Lazerson said in a press release that he believes this is the first step in a larger strategic vision. “The extraction of lithium from oil and gas well sources is a broad paradigm shift for the energy sector.” The potential to recover lithium from waste streams could prove to be a windfall as demand for lithium batteries for consumer electronics remains high.
Eureka Resources president and CEO Dan Ertel said, “Through this joint venture, we can help meet the growing need growing need for lithium while simultaneously making a positive environmental impact.” Ertel believes this adds to Eureka’s strong profile of advanced produced water treatment.
