Nicholas Siefert

Dr. Nicholas Siefert is a Research Mechanical Engineer at DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and a part-time instructor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). After graduating from Princeton University in 2002, Dr. Siefert served in the Active Duty U.S. Air Force, stationed at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Dayton, OH. Since 2008, Siefert has been working full-time at NETL’s Pittsburgh site, and he leads inhouse R&D at DOE/NETL in Produced Water Management and Effluent Treatment. He and the MUST Sorbent team were winners of both a 2021 R&D100 Award and the 2021 Secretary of Energy Team Award, for developing and licensing a low-cost sorbent material for selectively removing heavy metals and critical minerals from waste effluent streams. In 2022, Dr. Siefert led the team that released the NEWTS Database and Dashboard with searchable detailed wastewater compositions formatted for input into aqueous chemistry software, such as OLI Studio.
