In the last issue of this newsletter, while reviewing the Produced Water Society seminar in Midland, the Petroleum Environmental Research Forum (PERF) was sold short. It was inferred that PERF’s mission primarily addressed downstream issues. In fact, it addresses both upstream and downstream air and water challenges. A group of companies are studying treatment options for high TDS (>50,000 mg/L) produced water. The companies cooperating on this study include Ramboll, Total, Saudi Aramco, Total and Shell. The University of North Dakota’s Energy and Environmental Research Center is assisting.
Most of PERF’s members are major oil companies that operate both upstream and downstream. It is a little surprising that smaller independents do not join given the leverage that can be realized by working alongside the big companies and taking advantage of the shared funding.
Any oil and gas company can become a member of PERF. Members must pay a one-time initiation fee of $2,000 and the annual membership fee of $5,000. Project costs are split equally among the participants. Project reports are shared with other members.
