From the Secretary's Desk Greetings from me in Houston, where the weather is still good, but we know what is coming! I am sorry that this first newsletter of the year is late. Due to health problems and post seminar work, it is only now that I can comment and gossip about the goings on in the produced water industry. With this first edition we are going to lay out the page or pages of the newsletter for intensive reading. There will be of course, my ramblings, then the following. 1) Latest new technologies that could possibly work in our industry. 2) Employment opportunities for people looking for work. 3) Companies looking for potential employees. 4) PWS conferences and/or workshops that are in the planning. 5) Members' remarks or questions. 6) Any other points of interest. I have to start off with the 2011 Produced Water Seminar. It is a gratifying feeling that over the three days, during which we had 32 papers presented, there was only one complaint. There were no complaints about the food in the hotel, nor in the two restaurants that were selected for the evening dinners. So, according to the age old adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", which means we will be hosting the 2012 seminar at the same hotel and we will be using the same restaurants for the evening dinners. The 2012 Produced Water Seminar will be from January 17th, 18th & 19th. One change that we will make is that we have been asked to arrange a dinner for the Thursday evening of the seminar. We will also follow up this years' with our workshop series. This year (2011), we have planned to hold a full day workshop in Lafayette, LA in mid June. The plans at the moment are to hold a 3 subject workshop; 1) Production process equipment for the removal of oil and solids from produced water – Teacher: James Robinson – Consultant. 2) Discussion of chemical aids to improve the separation efficiency. Teacher: Ron Bosch- Senior Research Chemist for Champion Chemicals. 3) Understanding sample taking and data collection for all methods of measuring oil and solids in water through the separation process. Teacher: that would be me. The workshop has been set for the June 17th, 2011, at the Hilton in Lafayette. A flier will be sent out soon. We will provide further information once we have confirmed with the hotel. I trust and hope you will support us in this venture and that you will help circulate the coming flier for this workshop to all your clients and customers. The next new activity is the PWS lunch, to be held each month in Houston. For the first couple of meetings there will be no set program, just a meeting of people interested in chatting and getting up to speed with what is going on in the industry and listening to all the gossip. The first lunch will be at the Lucky Village Chinese Buffett on Westheimer, just outside Beltway 8, heading west. The address is 10755 Westheimer, 77042. The restaurant has an excellent buffet, recommended by many on the Board and other colleagues of the society that have eaten there before. The one endearing feature is that it is very quiet and you can hear yourself speaking. The date for the first luncheon will be Tuesday April 5, 2011, and the cost will be about $15.00, including tax and tip. Please let me know as soon as possible if you will attend, so I can reserve a room if necessary. Moving along, we will now look at what is going on in the industry. As the seminar attendees noted in my wish list for this year, we are still looking at the removal of solubles for deep water platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. March, 2011 Edition March, 2011 Edition Also, I would like to hear from the monitor and analyzer people as to where we are on subsea data collection. We need something that is efficient and has a very small footprint. So where are we? We had quite a few presentations at the seminar, but as usual most were reports of pilot testing and lab work. Instead of reporting on a process in this newsletter, I would ask that MyCelx, PWA. Veolia and any others, please let me know where we are and if there is production data available that has been authenticated. With regard to people looking for work, Tina Lapene is in the market for a new challenge and her résume is on the web page. I have also heard that James Robinson might be persuaded to take a position if the conditions are favorable. Furthermore, it is heard in the whisperings that there is an experienced professional business manager about to leave his post, and he is looking for new challenges. With regard to companies looking for personnel, well... the list is too long. If anybody is considering moving, please phone or email me and I will confidentially give you names that may suit your requirements. In passing, I must report that 2011 has welcomed a few people that are entering the ranks of consulting. They are: Johnny Richard – Ex Shell, Consulting, "Real World Surveillance". Warren Smith – Ex ProSep, Sales Representation Ted Frankiewicz - Consulting – Set up his own company, California. Darrell Gallup – Ex Chevron, Consulting in Washington State or Oregon, not sure at this moment. As you can see, there are changes taking place and nothing stays the same. This is why we come to the conferences and workshops. For this newsletter, we have already mentioned the venues for the workshop and the 2012 seminar. It is my hope that you will attend and pass the word on to all your friends and colleagues. We must not forget to mention that the OTC is just around the corner and there will be a lot of our PWS members present. It is hoped that all PWS member booths will show the PWS logo. If you do not have one, let me know and we will make sure we get one to you. I hope the seminar attendees have kept their seminar lanyards and will use them for the registration cards, this will give us a little more visibility. Other conferences that are of interest are:
- NEL Produced Water Workshop in Aberdeen
- NEL Produced Water Club Aberdeen
- IQPC Produced Water Conference Kuala Lumpur
For further information, go to the PWS web page and look up Conferences. As this is the first of the newsletters, there are no member's remarks or questions. At the moment, I am planning for this newsletter to be quarterly, but if there is enough interest, I will be happy to publish one monthly. Last but not least, we will have a general section for any other points of interest. There is nothing to report at this time, because as I have mentioned before, the newsletter is just beginning. I am hoping you have enjoyed this information, and I look forward to your comments and participation. I would like to take the opportunity to introduce Barbara Larson, who will be assisting me in putting together the newsletter. Please send her all your ideas, news, gossip, etc. She will be helping me each month to gather and put together all the information in order to provide you with an informative newsletter. Barbara can be contacted at Produced Water Absorbents (PWA) at: b.larson@pwabsorbents.com. If you need alternative ways to contact Barbara, please email her and she will send you the details. Sincerely, Colin
